Why Mercy Ships?

"An estimated ONE BILLION people lack access to even basic health care. They are plagued by preventable disease, untreated illnesses and neglected injuries. Even a simple toothache can become a life-threatening crisis. With the support and prayers of friends like you, we can say to the suffering men, women and children – Mercy is on its way!"  Mercy Ships website - Our Work

The long lasting impact of Mercy Ships - capacity building.

Mercy Ships website - Our Work

Capacity building involves supporting the local medical staff with training, as well as developing local infrastructure and even agricultural training, to support communities to be self sufficient - a hand up not a hand out.

So why am I onboard?
All the staff onboard are volunteers, captivated by the mission of Mercy Ships to live out the gospel by bringing hope and healing to the world's poorest. There are around 400-500 volunteers at any one time, from surgeons to dining room assistants, working together for this purpose. Among these volunteers, there are a group of families who also serve on board.

I will be one of the elementary (Primary school) teachers, teaching the children of the long term volunteers. I will be volunteering on the Africa Mercy for two years - the first year will be in Senegal and the second year in Liberia (2020/2021). Teaching on board the Africa Mercy is an incredible combination of my interests - using my passion for teaching and children, and combining this with the chance to serve the poor in a meaningful and sustainable way.

The international projects encompass far more than the 10 month field service in the country. Mercy Ships works with the country for around 5 years, including setting up the working relationships and protocols for the teams to come, as well as developing infrastructure to support the work, and ongoing training and development once the Africa Mercy has gone.

What an incredible way to show the love of God to a group of people, through words and actions. What a fantastic work to be involved in!
